What to Expect Before, During, and After Spinal Cord Stimulation Therapy in Theater District, NY

Are you struggling with chronic pain and looking for an effective solution? Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) might be the answer. At NY Spine Medicine, we specialize in providing comprehensive spinal cord stimulation therapy to help you regain control of your life. Located in Theater District, NY, we serve patients from New York City and beyond.

What is Spinal Cord Stimulation?

Spinal cord stimulation is a cutting-edge treatment designed to manage chronic pain, particularly in the back. It involves implanting a small device, known as a spinal cord stimulator, which sends electrical impulses to the spinal cord. These impulses interrupt pain signals before they reach the brain, providing significant relief. Spinal cord stimulation for pain relief has been a game-changer for many of our patients. In addition to pain relief, benefits include improved quality of life and reduced need for medications. Moreover, unlike other forms of pain management, spinal cord stimulation is minimally invasive, which means a shorter recovery time.

What to Expect Before Treatment

Before undergoing spinal cord stimulation treatment, the team at NY Spine Medicine will conduct a thorough evaluation, which will include:

  • Medical History Review: We’ll review your medical history to ensure you’re a suitable candidate for the therapy.
  • Physical Examination: A detailed physical exam will help us understand your specific pain points.
  • Consultation: During your consultation, we’ll discuss the spinal cord stimulator benefits and address any concerns you may have.

The Treatment Process

During the spinal cord stimulation procedure, our specialists will guide you through every step:

  • Trial Period: Initially, a temporary stimulator is implanted to evaluate its effectiveness. This trial typically lasts for a week.
  • Permanent Implantation: If the trial is successful, a permanent device is implanted. This involves placing the stimulator under the skin and connecting it to electrodes near the spinal cord.
  • Programming: The device is then programmed to deliver the optimal level of stimulation for pain relief.

After Treatment: Recovery and Follow-Up

Post-treatment care is crucial for the success of spinal cord stimulation therapy. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Recovery: Most patients can return home the same day. Mild discomfort at the implantation site is normal and should subside within a few days.
  • Follow-Up Appointments: Regular follow-up appointments at NY Spine Medicine in Theater District, NY, will ensure the device is functioning correctly and providing maximum relief.
  • Device Management: We’ll teach you how to manage your spinal cord stimulator, including adjusting settings and charging the device.

Have a question?

In 1836, mayor Cornelius Lawrence opened 42nd Street to encourage the city’s northern expansion, saying “move up town and enjoy the pure, clean air”. The Theater District began attracting theaters and restaurants after the Metropolitan Opera House moved to West 39th Street and Broadway in 1883. Oscar Hammerstein I opened his Victoria Theatre on 42nd Street in 1899. Accessibility to the Theater District improved as electrified trolley lines started in 1899, followed by the opening of the New York City Subway’s first line in 1904.

“The Great White Way” is a nickname for a section of Broadway in Midtown Manhattan that encompasses the Theater District. In 1880, Broadway between Union Square and Madison Square was illuminated by Brush arc lamps, making it among the first electrically lighted streets in the United States. By the 1890s, 23rd Street to 34th Street was so brightly illuminated by electrical advertising signs people began calling it “The Great White Way”. As the theater district shifted uptown just before the turn of the century, the nickname stuck and became synonymous.

Over the years, the district has been referred to by New Yorkers as “the Rialto”, “The Main Stem”, and “Broadway”. Around the turn of the 20th century, it was simply called “The Street”.
